This is Tank

This is Tank! Last night our team received an urgent call in the middle of the night about a dog that was involved in a lawnmower accident. It had caused his back leg to be mangled and badly bleeding. This sweet boy needed a rescue to quickly step up and take him in, otherwise, he was going to be euthanized.

Tank is now safe with Wags and will get the medical care he desperately needs, including a leg amputation due to the severity of his injuries. He’s expected to make a full recovery from the surgery and we’re hopeful that he’ll adjust to life with three legs in no time! Tank is such a loving, happy boy and we can’t wait to see him pain and worry free again.

So far Tank’s medical bills have reached over $3500. It cost $1,500 just to keep him overnight at the vet and his leg amputation scheduled for tomorrow will cost another $2,000.

This boy also needs a foster starting Saturday! He’s a 1-year-old, 126 lb Great Dane that’s a certified good boy. Even after everything he’s been through, he has such a friendly, loving personality that makes you fall in love with him quickly. He’s been so friendly with every person and pup! While in foster care, he’ll be healing from his leg amputation, so he’ll do best in a home with a fenced-in backyard to ensure easy access to the outdoors.

When we originally received the call from the emergency room, Tank had already been surrendered to the animal hospital. Due to his legal ownership changing and privacy reasons, we did not have access to his previous family's contact info nor could it be provided. At that time, there were a lot of unknowns and questions around the circumstances of the accident.

After Tank's post was shared, his family reached out. We learned that the accident happened just before dusk and with travel time, wait times, figuring out financials and ultimately surrendering, that is why it was so late when we received the call from the hospital. The family was quoted $7-11k with a 30% interest rate for his emergency care to stay overnight and receive amputation. Taking on this amount of debt is something most families cannot do, and it’s a sad reality when tragedy occurs. The family did not want to euthanize him or relinquish custody, and as heartbroken as they were, if going to a rescue saved his life they wanted him to get the care he needed.

While this is a rare situation for Wags, after speaking to the family and learning more about the details of the accident and the options provided by the hospital, it was an obvious decision to reunite Tank with his family. It was clear through conversation, vet history, and adoption records that they are a loving home. His family is covering his remaining medical bills, and is so grateful to our community for the love shown to Tank.
