Celebrate National Pit Bull Awareness Day on October 26
National Pit Bull Awareness Day was created to educate communities, spread awareness, and combat stereotypes of bully breeds. Rescue-lovers everywhere can use this day to advocate for deserving dogs that may otherwise not get a second chance. Pit bulls are one of the most misunderstood breeds out there and, unfortunately, they are the most often euthanized in our local shelters.

We look at our rescue work as an opportunity to change minds: we find the most family-friendly dogs in our local shelters and place them in loving homes. Not only do we save lives and complete families, but those dogs and families go on to create educators and advocates everywhere. Pit bulls and their responsible owners are breed ambassadors every time they go for a walk, go to a dog park, or meet a new stranger! This means they set a positive example that can ultimately change the perspective of a misinformed person.
Did you know that the American Temperament Testing Society (ATTS) tests over 240 breeds of dogs every year, and pit bulls are rated as good as or better than most other popular breeds? This evidence-based research demonstrates that pit bulls are not innately aggressive. It also means that having a responsible owner is a greater determinant of temperament than type of breed.
Whether you’ve rescued a pit bull yourself or have posted a photo with a mushy pittie while volunteering, that is advocacy! A picture is worth a thousand words. The more we can visually show the world that pit bulls are family-friendly, gentle, and just like any other dog, the more people will see and believe that the terrible stigma is based solely in human cruelty. We want to bring as much positive attention to Pit Bulls as possible, and National Pit Bull Awareness Day is the perfect opportunity for you to do the same!
Casey Boshae Williams is the owner of the apparel, jewelry, and home goods online store, The Gentle Pit, and her mission is to “rebrand Pitbull type dogs through beautiful design and imagery.” She says, “We want to reach people who’ve perhaps never even thought about rescuing a dog or loving a pittie.” She uses her company as a platform for positive pitbull representation. We hope her mission inspires you to be creative about your own advocacy!
