“Place your oxygen mask on yourself before assisting others.” Such is the rule on an airplane in the event of loss of air pressure.  For many, the rule also serves as a metaphor to remind us that we must take care of ourselves before we can properly take care of others.  Well, what if there was a way to take care of ourselves because we are taking care of others?  Turns out,  there is…


May is Mental Health Awareness Month and often this time can be daunting as methods for managing our mental health seem to be coming at us all day.   Fortunately, we’re here to dive into one that requires looking no further than caring for our furry family members! 

Science shows time and again what people who have a four-legged companion all know in our hearts: there are numerous health benefits to having a dog.  According to a recent study, dogs have an “overwhelming positive mental health impact” on their owners.  While there is no singular reason for the impact, everyday activities we engage in with our dogs not only serve to deepen the bond we have with our companion, but also benefit the mental and physical health for both.

Walking and playing.  Research shows that exercise through playing with and/or walking our dog increases endorphins which are known to fight depression.  Furthermore, establishing a daily dog walking routine provides the much needed exercise everyone needs while also lessening isolation and loneliness.

Petting.  Yep that’s right, studies show the simple act of petting reaps great benefits!  It’s not only relaxing, it releases hormones that reduce anxiety as we connect with our dog.  Additional benefits -  it can lower blood pressure, reduce muscle tension and decrease stress!

Cuddling. Ever hear of the “love hormone”? Well, according to science cuddling with our dogs stimulates the brain's production of the same hormone produced by mothers during childbirth and breastfeeding.  As if that doesn’t say enough,  it is also closely associated with bond formation and feelings of trust.  So cuddle away! Both our dogs and us will reap the benefits from unconditional love and support.     

It's hard to argue with so many mental (and physical) health benefits to caring for our dogs.   The best thing about them… what’s good for us is good for the dogs as well.  What could be better?!  So here’s permission to grab the pup and snuggle for an extra half hour in the morning, pet them on the couch in the middle of the day, or take that extra long walk after dinner.  The only thing you have to gain is your health.
